5 Types of Garage Doors

Choosing the right type of garage door for your home can enhance its curb appeal, improve energy efficiency, and increase security. Here are five popular types of garage doors, each offering unique benefits and styles.

1. Roll-Up Garage Doors

Roll-up doors are more common in commercial settings but are also suitable for residential homes with limited ceiling space. These doors operate with a rolling mechanism that coils the door around a drum above the door opening. They are known for their durability and high-performance operation, making them ideal for high-traffic areas.

2. Sectional Garage Doors

Sectional doors are the most popular in the United States. They are made up of panel sections connected with hinges. As the door opens and closes, wheels at the edge of each panel roll inside a vertical track on each side of the door opening. Sectional garage doors lie parallel to the ceiling when fully opened and are available in various materials and insulations.

3. Side-Hinged Garage Doors

Side-hinged garage doors swing open and closed from a hinged frame on either side of the opening, similar to large barn doors. These doors are an excellent choice for traditional or heritage homes and can be automated with special conversion arms. They are often made of wood, but steel versions are also available.

4. Tilt-Up/Up and Over Canopy Garage Doors

Unlike the roll-up, a tilt-up canopy garage door tilts up into the garage and extends past the front of the house when open. It’s made from a single solid piece and operates under a pivoting hinge mechanism. This style allows for maximum ceiling space inside the garage and is commonly used where the garage size is limited.

5. Tilt-Up/Up and Over Retractable Garage Doors

Similar to the tilt-up canopy, the retractable version also tilts up into the garage but does not protrude past the front of the house when it’s open. It is supported by independent suspension cables that slide along horizontal tracks at the ceiling. This type offers more drive-through width when open and is a little more complex than the canopy design.

Each type of garage door has its own set of advantages depending on your home’s style, space, and functionality needs. Whether you prefer the robustness of roll-up doors, the classic appeal of side-hinged doors, or the sleek operation of sectional doors, there’s a style out there to suit your preferences.
